Nurturing leadership skills while facilitating change
A leadership education organization in conjunction with a local university delivered a leadership session nurturing leadership skills while facilitating change. Their aim is to democratize leadership development and unlock human potential by providing affordable and accessible leadership development to all people around the globe. Through low-cost leadership programs, the initiative fosters a greater understanding of leadership and personal development through a transformative learning process that enhances self-awareness, self confidence, interpersonal skills and greater clarity of future challenges and goals. Such practices of exemplary leadership similarly provide a useful framework for participants to facilitate change and grow similar projects in their respective universities. The initiative progresses personal development, enabling future leaders to self-authorize themselves to be both fully human and professional as part of a collaborative effort across multiple cultures and organization types.

In 2009 the Center for Creative Leadership’s “Leadership Beyond Boundaries” initiative delivered a leadership session on Nurturing Leadership Skills while Facilitating Change during Strathmore University’s Education for Sustainable Development in Higher Education Workshop, held in Nairobi, Kenya.
The workshop explored facilitating value-based change as well as change through positive values amongst 25 university lecturers drawn from 14 African countries working on change projects. Participants discussed effecting change through positive values, presenting an opportunity to explore definitions of these values and their significance is in leadership. Reflection questions further helped participants connect with their own deeply held personal values and principles, increasing self awareness and raising their level of consciousness as leaders. Such practices of exemplary leadership similarly provided a useful framework for the participants to facilitate change and grow the Change Projects in their respective universities.
The project is part of the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) initiative to mainstream environmental sustainability in African universities. Participating lecturers spearheading Change Projects in their respective Universities have the responsibility of sharing the vision of the project with university leadership and generating commitment of other university staff and students towards a successful implementation of the project.
The Leadership Beyond Boundaries initiative is a good example of what we can achieve through collaboration and transformative learning. Leadership development is first and foremost personal development, enabling future leaders to self-authorize themselves to be both fully human and professional – ideally attained as part of a collaborative effort across multiple cultures and organization types.
