Bench 9: Charlie

This bench will form part of 50+20’s Emerging Benchmarks mobile exhibit and prototyping platform, where management education FOR the world can be prototyped, demonstrated and shared during RIO+20.
  • Name: Charlie
  • Occupation: Wood carver
  • Country / City: Free person, only himself

Charlie is not a tramp or a homeless person but one might think so when first meeting him. Basically that is one of the only things that bothers him. He says, he is a jurassic worker, doing greenwood furniture.

After a turbulent life, and a time in East German jails, he decided to step out of society and become a totally free person. Since then, everyday he only does what he likes, sleeping and staying were he wants – living his life. Not time, no work, or even countries should rule his daily routine – the only thing he claims is: His personal peace!

Design & Concept of materials

Since Charlie knows the streets of his neighbourhood best, he found an old wooden bench and started to carve it. He will replace various parts with artfully carved sticks he found in parks. His bench is questioning the overall topic of freedom, the constant flow in the material world, the coming and going of things.

Every single day of the year he sits in front of streetcafes, carving found wooden sticks or roots. He devotes so much patience and love to it, that sometimes it takes him a week or two, carving or sanding 10 hours a day, to create a beautiful and unique piece of artisan craftswork. The only guidance he is following during this process, is his feeling and what the wood itselve offers him. By the way he is selling the sticks he made, if poeple and passersby showing their interest, and by the way he stays himself.
