Design & Concept of materials:

K A Y I K  – is the turkish word for fisherboat and the theme for my bench. For me it is one of the strongest the symbols reflecting the sotries of the Bosporus and Istanbul. We have many poets in Turkey, who got inspired by the fisherboats. These old boats carry the time with them and have adopted the smell of the sea in itselve, they even are preserving it. I want to interact with a boat from there, so you can even smell it and even get a try to feel all that. To get a small boat like this in motion, one man has to use just his bare hands, take the rowblades and row to get any further.

The construction will be held together by old ropes and fishnets. The legs will be cut of old rowblades, the wood comes from the sides of the boat itselve. We will use an old fisherboat, rotten and destroyed, with a great patina. And things found on the beach, used fishing ropes and nets. Leftovers from past stories at the Bosporus.

 Philosophy:

My bench will be like a bridge, that connects 2 continents. A bridge is so important to me, like the turkish dancing dervish – one foot is solid on one place, the other travels through the world. Therefore my bench shows an important part of my migrant history as well, building a connection between orient and occident – the hanging bridge in Istanbul inspires my design.
